FJ80 → N70 Clockspring Conversion
Convert an 80 Series to run an N70-style clockspring & steering-wheel head-unit controls.
Before you start
Disconnect the battery and straighten the front wheels before removing the steering wheel. Work slowly and photograph any wiring before you cut it. Not sure on something? Email us before going further.
Centre the wheels & remove the steering wheel
Straighten the front wheels first so the clockspring lines up on reassembly.
Remove the horn-pad screw
Undo the single screw on the back of the wheel — the horn pad then unclips.
Remove the horn wire & 19mm nut
Unplug the horn wire, then undo the 19mm nut holding the wheel on.
Pull off these two parts
The spring and plastic collar just pull straight off — no tools needed.
Remove the steering cowling
Undo the screws circled and lift the cowling away.
Cut off the two tabs
Trim the two tabs flush so the new clockspring mount can seat properly.
Fit the supplied base plate
Bolt on the supplied base plate and centre it as best you can.
Find the horn wire — GREEN/RED
Locate the GREEN/RED horn wire in the harness, close to the mount (the lead is short).
Prep the supplied adapter harness
Untape the adapter harness and separate the wires as shown — de-pin, or cut the wire from its connector.
Join to the GREEN/RED horn wire
Join that adapter wire to the GREEN/RED horn wire.
Fit the clockspring & plug in the 12-pin
Install the clockspring and plug in the 12-pin connector.
Note: the spare connector with the two orange wires is for cruise control — N/A to most FJ80.
Cut the cowling for clearance
Trim the cowling as pictured to clear the new clockspring.
Snap off the lock & fit the wheel
Remove or snap off the clockspring transport lock, then refit the steering wheel.
Run the 28-pin plug to your head unit
Route the 28-pin plug up to the head unit. Most Sony / Kenwood units are plug-and-play; others need an adapter.
